The BBC Persian TV channel broadcasts from London and provides news, current affairs, information, and factual programming in Farsi to Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. It complements the existing BBC Persian Radio and Online services to offer an integrated multimedia package.

The channel has full access to the BBC global news resources, and adheres to the BBC values of accuracy, impartiality, and balance. It is free from commercial, political and religious affiliations or pressures. It is modern in style and has a broad audience appeal.

We are looking to appoint a camera/lighting journalist to work primarily with our features teams, but also with our news team.

You will play a lead role in the journalism and production process from developing story and programme ideas to picture gathering in the field. You will shoot high quality material for either live broadcast or recording, with particular attention to lighting and camera placement. This will include feeding in material to the centre.

You will have extensive experience of working on location to tight deadlines. You will be experienced in working independently and as part of a team. You will also be experienced in full range of location craft and technical skills along with a well developed visual awareness.

Persian TV offers a service of video/audio/text across a range of media which include TV, Radio and Online. The service is multi-media in operation for daily newsgathering and daily, weekly and long-term planning, whilst output streams are run by single media teams, teams working in collaboration with each other, or sometimes by single teams. The TV service broadcasts 8 hours a day, covering 7 days a week.

Job Purpose:

To light and film creatively, whether for important interviews or more fast-paced programming, ensuring high-quality sound and pictures.

To play a lead role in the journalism and production process, from developing story and programme ideas and treatments to providing picture gathering in the field and picture editing of the highest quality. You will also feed in material when and where appropriate. You will be responsible for getting to locations with appropriate equipment, often on your own, and therefore driving is a regular part of the duties.

Accountabilities:
 
 To shoot material of the highest quality for either live transmission or recording, providing a representative visual and audio account of events. This will include camerawork, sound work and lighting in the field and on occasions where required at base.
 
To work to a brief, delivering material, unsupervised or working with others, contributing ideas to enhance the visual and journalistic content of the story, being aware of the different styles and techniques of the programmes.
 
To offer and develop story and programme ideas, to suggest new angles on existing stories and ways of moving stories on both visually and journalistically.

To be responsible for covering developing stories, amending and updating material as required.
 
To undertake interviewing and suitable journalistic duties on location in both recorded and live situations.
 
To select, prepare and edit material for transmission. To complete such work to meet strict transmission deadlines.

To "feed" material in situations where a Facilities engineer is not required, using a range of systems from permanent circuits to portable and vehicle based equipment. This includes the full range of live camerawork, sound work and rigging.
 
To undertake field producing including research, writing and production as required. To set up and co-coordinate on-site facilities to meet programme needs, including leading teams e.g. on multiple camera shoots. To liaise effectively and establish good relations with all other contacts both outside and within the BBC.

To write stories to the required specification maintaining professional standards of accuracy and impartiality and fair dealing, adhering to BBC Producer guidelines
 
To operate within the BBC’s Safety and Editorial policy guidelines. At all times maintaining professional journalistic, ethical and technical standards.

To contribute to the development of operational procedures and to maximize the use of existing and new technology

To contribute to the development of more junior staff, providing mentoring, training and guidance.


Knowledge and Experience:

Extensive experience working on location, under pressure, and to tight deadlines with less experienced producers

 

Experience as a Journalist in a News broadcasting environment, or as a technician practising a range of location craft skills (e.g. camerawork / lighting / editing / location facilities) in a broadcast environment able to shoot material of the highest quality, providing a representative visual and audio account of events..

Demonstrate interest in and commitment to News.

Experience of the full range of location craft and technical skills, the ability to operate current broadcast technical equipment on location and at base, demonstrating a well developed sense of visual awareness and a willingness to learn how to use new technology and kit.

Experience of operating in a specialist area e.g. business, social or foreign affairs, the arts or science is desirable.

Need to demonstrate editorial awareness and judgment combined with

a thorough understanding of the editorial aims and policies of BBC News. This includes knowledge of the law as it affects broadcast journalism and a thorough understanding relevant BBC editorial and production guidelines and policies.

Able to take responsibility for any brief that might be assigned by a programme, newsroom or newsgathering editor, showing ability to work lead small well

teams including supervising less experienced members of staff. This includes working well within a team of journalists across the whole range of BBC outlets and the ability to work under pressure.

Willingness to travel in UK and abroad, often at short notice; may be asked to work in area of hardship/public unrest /war-zones.

Must have thorough knowledge of relevant Health and Safety guidelines and Legislation
